A Local Blue Neon Saxophone

In Vancouver we really only have 1 blues club: The Yale Hotel on Granville Street. This club is home to the blues in BC’s largest city.

Like many night clubs the world over, the Yale is pretty sad looking during the daytime. But at night, its blue neon beacon beckons patrons from far and wide.

If you like neon, you’ll want to check out Gord McKenna’s photostream. He’s done an amazing job of capturing the city’s neon in photos. Night at Granville Island, Vancouver Twilight, and Vancouver during 2010 Olympics, are the sets that contain the most of his great neon shots.

…this is just my blog. My “real” website is www.bassic-sax.info. If you’re looking for sax info, you should check it out too. There’s lots there!

  1. I love old neon signs. Interestingly enough, there was a story in last night’s news about an art exhibit in which a local artist has captured some of Vancouver’s old neon in paintings. That wasn’t so much the interesting part. What shocked me, was when the arts reporter said that Vancouver used to have 19,000 neon signs. 😯

We have but a handful left now. Even some of the ones that Gord McKenna has captured in his photos are already gone. 😥
