When I saw this on eBay, I was trying to get my head around what it was, and how a player would use it.

The seller describes the item like this:
Here is a Vintage Keach & Greene saxophone reed “flip” cover up for bid Looks to be a alto size . Just leave it on the horn and flip it up to cover the reed .

I’m guessing this also doubles as a ligature. (?) The protective part flips out of the way when the player is playing, and then flips back to cover the reed when the sax is not in use.

Since I’ve never seen anything like this before, I tried Googling Keach & Greene—and various combinations containing the name—but that didn’t bring up anything other than a reference to a Conn-stencilled tenor that someone was selling.

The auction for this unusual, vintage saxophone accessory, goes until February 24. Bids start at $19.99. At the time of writing, there were no bids yet on this unique reed protector/ligature.
I have same one.
But I am not sure it’s for alto or tenor.
Anyone who is interested in this one
I can sell.
I have actually seen something like this. My great uncle played an old Beuscher TT and used this setup, which he later paired with his Meyer New York alto mouthpiece. Shame I never met him 🙁
He says he one day will give this horn and mouthpiece to me…
Can’t wait!!
Update: Well this saxophone ligature/reed protector did not sell. When the auction ended there were no bids on this vintage saxophone accessory oddity.
Oh, and BTW, the item was re-listed and that auction ended on March 3. Again no takers for the item. Weird… I would think this would have appealed to some collector out there.
