Bassic Sax Christmas Gift Roundup

This entry is part 18 of 18 in the series Christmas & Holiday Saxophone Gifts & Collectibles

It is time again for what has become as [almost] annual tradition: the Bassic Sax Christmas gift roundup of saxophone-inspired gifts and collectibles that might find their way under your tree if you’ve been nice. However, if you’ve been naughty, I have some other stuff that you might find as well.

After what seemed like hours of painful searching in places like Etsy, eBay, and general Google searches, I narrowed things down to the following for 2023. To keep things fresh, none of these have appeared in previous years’ lists.

The “Nice” List

If you’ve been a nice saxophone player in 2023, perhaps you’ll be lucky enough to find one of the following that Santa left for you under the Christmas tree.

The “Naughty” List

If you have been a naughty saxophone player in 2023, then without a doubt, you should get one of these under the Christmas tree this year. Furthermore, you should be made to wear it to every party this holiday season, and throughout 2024!

OK, let me give you moment to clean the coffee off your keyboard…

All done? Moving on then. These last gifts could fit into either the naught or nice category. I will let you decide where you want to put them.

Misc. saxophone gifts that are well… you decide for yourself

Blue crystal sax from China

In 2016 we saw a real crystal saxophone from Bavaria. You will have to decide for yourself if the one from China is true crystal. Me? I have my doubts.

Here is why I think it’s not true crystal:

  • The price of $13.20.
  • The minimum order of 50 pieces.
  • Production capacity of 1000 pieces.

If you would like to know the difference between crystal and glass I found a good resource for you. In it you will notice that the US and Europe have VASTLY different standards when it comes to what constitutes crystal. They don’t mention what China defines as crystal. No doubt the country will use a very loose definition as well.

Just as an aside, this is very roughly finished. The edges don’t even look polished.

There is no point giving you their description, since the one they put in is for a hand-cranked music box.

Goose alto mouthpiece

This 3D printed mouthpiece resembling a goose head made me laugh when I first saw it. I didn’t for a moment think it was serious. What’s even funnier is that they’re selling. When I first saw them 2 days ago there were 4 left. Now there is only 1 left. So OK then…

These MPs are available based on bore size: tight, standard, and loose fit. (Not normally a way I’ve seen MPs advertised before, but alright.)

Handmade
This mouthpiece is a high-resolution 3D print that has been hand-finished to a high standard to minimise print lines, optimise reed seal and maximise facing resolution. The surface feel is similar to a moulded plastic mouthpiece.

The print material is 100% food grade PLA+. No varnishes are used.

Internal geometry features a medium/large chamber with a long round-over baffle and the tip opening is approximately #6 (1.8mm +/- 0.1mm).

The sound is somewhat bright with good projection. For more info on the sound and playability

In case you wonder what this sounds like, wonder no more…

Well I think the title says all you need to know.

Let me go on record and say I question the “handmade” description of many items I saw on Etsy. There is a huge difference between handmade, and hand assembled, finished, or polished. You can’t call a 3D printed anything “handmade”.

So to sum up then

Christmas 2023 has offered us some interesting, new saxophone collectibles for that special horn player in your life. If none of these float your boat however, you can just wander over to eBay and Etsy and hunt for stuff. (I already entered the search words for you.)

Although the chances are you won’t get the gift in time for Christmas 2023, perhaps it gives you some ideas for next year, or for another special occasion that’s coming up.

If you are looking for Christmas ornaments, it is never too early to start for next year. eBay has lots featuring saxophones, as does Etsy.
