I’m still recovering from my surgery—the road is a bit rockier than I had imagined—so I have very little energy to do anything other than spend a few minutes on facebook each day, and maybe catch up on the news via the ‘Net. Other than that I’m spending a big chunk of my day sleeping with the TV on. This morning however, I decided to try and slowly get into what has become my normal routine and do some searching for what’s new or interesting in the world of saxophones.
Chimp with sax: the sax is so easy to play even a chimp can do it.
This morning I found a photo that embodies the comments that people have made over the years about the saxophone’s ease of play. This photo also harkens back to those old vintage ads by Buescher and Conn that told the populace that learning to play the sax was easy.

Hudson took this photo in Spain. Of course there is no word on what the artist meant with painting this garage door. Did the he/she mean to dis saxophone players? Is it as simple as that? Or was the meaning of this painting more complex?
Perhaps AMB plays sax him/herself and also has a pet chimp, and therefore just combined two of his/her favourite subject matters…
Oh, I got it, perhaps AMB is a fan of Planet of the Apes, and envisions an extra scene in which Cornelius played the saxophone for Zira during a romantic interlude. They did have a baby after all… 😈
Whatever the artist’s inspiration, Chimp with Sax is an example of urban art that puts our instrument front and centre in the subject matter. One remaining question I have is: Why is the the chimp wearing a Tilley hat? Talk about a fashion faux pas.
BTW, did anyone notice how small that red door on the right side is? What’s up with that anyway?
Hi Helen,
You don’t expect the chimp to wake everyone up when he comes home from an after-hours session, do you? 😉
Seriously, I suspect it is access to the sprinkler system (fire suppressant) supply for the building.
Peace,
paul
The chimp is wearing a Tilley hat because it’s indestructable
I think it must have been this guy…
Is this a real case of gorilla grip?
To me the chimp looks like Kokomo jr, who was known to wear fedora hats and play the super 20.
In his time the hat was still a gangsta thing and not the outdoors statement it became.
:2cents: ps Kokomo jr retired before the first Tilley hat was made. :2cents:

Maybe it’s the closest to a pork pie hat the artist could imagine?
