It was 197 years ago today, on November 6, 1814, that Adolphe Sax was born. No one knew that his birth in Dinant, Belgium, would, only a few short years later, bring about a fundamental shift in the musical landscape.
This shift would forever alter the lives of many musicians, as they began the study of an instrument that Adolphe Sax invented, and patented in 1846. And no, I’m not talking about this. 😉
And while the saxophone may have changed some over the past 165 years, it is still very much recognizable as the instrument that Adolphe Sax built. Sax’s birthplace on the other hand, not so recognizable anymore.
I suspect that if Adolphe Sax could see Dinant, Belgium today, he wouldn’t recognize it. He’d have an easier time finding his way around the key structure of a modern saxophone, than he would the sights and sounds of Dinant.

I did have to reduce the size of Myben.be’s panorama shot, and optimize it somewhat for my blog. I encourage you to check out the full size image (6235 x 2335 pixels) on Flickr.
