After a couple of weeks of working on the site updates necessitated by: 1. Time, and 2. The new theme I purchased for this site, I thought I would give myself a break from the drudgery today and look for an interesting topic to write an article about. It took less than an hour for me to find the perfect eye candy: a steampunk sax.
eBay is indeed a treasure-trove of saxophone-themed and related stuff. Anytime I go there I have no idea what I’m going to find. Today I stumbled across this little gem.
The seller appears to be the artist who created the piece. He/she describes it like this:
Ooak… steampunked saxophone. This is a real brass saxophone that I striped from its original make. I used gears from old clock , old radio tubes, copper tubes, and brass parts to create this . The size is 26″ tall by 12″ wide.
Awesome idea. A friend of mine who regularly goes to steampunk fairs and events, had the same idea years ago. I gave Donna an old alto sax that she could use for just this purpose. I should ask her what she ever did with it. But I digress….
The horn used by slotzkin1 is a Kohlert stencil with rolled tone holes. It is engraved: The Edgware Made For Boosey And Hawkes.
I haven’t spent a lot of time studying Kohlert, since my buddy Pete Hales had already done a lot of research on the brand. What I do find interesting though, is that this stencil has split bell keys.
Off the top of my head I can’t recall seeing a Kohlert-made Boosey and Hawkes stencil this old before.
If you love this steampunk sax, pop on over to eBay and grab it before it gets scooped up by someone else. The price is $1,200 US, and the seller offers worldwide shipping.
Oh, and just an aside, if you’re a sax player; suffering from a G.A.S. attack; but are having a hard time justifying yet another saxophone purchase; then this steampunk sax might just be your ticket out of the proverbial dog house. 😉 😆
