The Saxophone In Pop Music: Will 2011’s Trend Continue In 2012?

Do you have almost super-human hearing when it comes to saxophone tracks? Do you find yourself sitting at dinner in a noisy restaurant with your partner or friends, when suddenly you notice the background music has a saxophone line? Do you suddenly stop your conversation in mid-sentence to listen to the sax solo or riff?

If you’re anything like me, this happens to you on a regular basis. It happens so often to me, that it has become a running joke among our circle of friends.

Last night we were at a party, when my super-sax-sensing-radar went off again. The song I heard was a modern pop song—one that I hadn’t heard before. Through all the noise and talking that was going on I hadn’t been listening to the words, but I had noticed that the song had a typical dance beat. Then all of a sudden there it was: a sax riff.

Fortunately the host of the party was using one of the CBC Galaxie radio stations to provide the commercial-free music for the evening. This morning I was able to go to the Galaxie website, and through their online listing of songs check what they played over the past 24 hours.

The song that that got my sax senses tingling, was called Burning, by the Canadian artist Mia Martina. The song is off her debut album Devotion, which was released in August 2011.

According to Martina’s website, Burning is currently doing extremely well.

Mia Martina’s new single “Burning” has been burning up the charts currently at #11 on iTunes Top 20 .

Since 2011 appeared to signal the return of the saxophone to pop and indie music (see my post of December 17, 2011 for more on this), perhaps Burning is a sign that 2012 might continue the trend. Now let’s hope that more artists pick up the torch and run with it as well.

BTW, do you notice any similarities between Burning and Mr. Saxobeat by Alexandra Stan? Seems a little close to me, but then I’m not a copyright lawyer.

…this is just my blog. My “real” website is www.bassic-sax.info. If you’re looking for sax info, you should check it out too. There’s lots there!
