Saxophones, And Porsches, And Dubai, Oh My!

Do you like saxophones? Do you like fast cars? Let’s see how good your combined knowledge of saxophone and fast car trivia is.

What do the Rascher Saxophone Quartet, the Straßenversion (street legal version) of the 1997 Porsche 911 GT1, Ferdinand Alexander Porsche, music composer Joanna Marsh, and Dubai have in common?

If you said the the world première of a piece of music named after an iconic Porsche, and dedicated to the designer of said car, then you would be absolutely correct.

According to an article posted on the January 17, 2012 online edition of the AMEinfo.com, on Tuesday, January 15, 2012, Germany’s Rascher Saxophone Quartet performed their first public performance of Straßenversion, at Dubai’s Madinat Theatre. The piece was composed by Joanna Marsh, a British composer currently living in Dubai.

Marsh wanted to compose something that was strongly linked to Dubai, and with the city-state’s preoccupation with fast cars, a musical homage to Porsche seems quite natural.

However, Straßenversion, which is named after the 1997 street legal version of Porsche’s iconic race car, the 911 GT1 (shown above), and dedicated to the company’s founder and car’s designer, the late Ferdinand Alexander Porsche, is not about driving fast in a race car. Rather, Straßenversion is about form and power. Marsh says:

…it is not the driving of the fast car that inspires the music of this piece, it is about homogeneity of design, flow and the smoothness of movement that come from a powerful engine.

2013 happens to be the 50th anniversary of Porsche’s 911. Perhaps there can be no better tribute to this iconic German car, than a iconic German saxophone quartet performing a specially-composed piece of music for the occasion.

I’ll admit I’m a bit biased. I lived in Stuttgart, the city in which Porsches are built, and my dad was a Porsche Master mechanic. (We have lots of vintage Porsche paraphernalia around the house.) Also, my saxophones have been known to enjoy a drive in one on occasion. Anyone who bought Pete Hales’ saxophone calendar a few years ago might remember this cover…

saxophones, Porsche, Selmer Mark VI, baritone, tenor

And what’s a Porsche driver without Ray Bans?

saxophone, Porsche, Selmer Mark VI baritone sax, wearing sunglasses, sitting behind wheel of Porsche

…this is just my blog. My “real” website is www.bassic-sax.info. If you’re looking for sax info, you should check it out too. There’s lots there!

    1. Yup, porn x 2. How can anyone resist? I figured my first post after such a long break should be a good one.

Yesterday while pouring through my photos I happened across the actual cover Pete sent me of calendar. I had forgotten that the Porsche shown here that my Selmers took for a drive was in fact a 2001, 911 Carrera
