All throughout my school years, my band teachers talked about a big band they all seemed to play in called The Moonliters. Although many years have gone by since I first heard The Moonliters name, I had not forgotten it.
In January 2014, I got a phone call to sub for the 2nd alto player. That sub spot turned into a permanent tenor spot, as well as the designated fill-in for any chair necessary when required. (That’s what happens when you own all the voices of saxophone. You sub for everyone.)
The Moonliters is a 19-piece big band that specializes in swing, jump, jive, and Latin music from the 1930s to the present day. However, I would be lying if I said we didn’t bring back strong memories of the Benny Goodman, Glenn Miller, and Dorsey era for those who lived it.
The reason for this strong sonic association with these famous big bands of the past? One simple reason: For the most part, The Moonliters play the original charts, just as they were played by the big name acts in the day. But don’t think we’re just stuck in a time warp: Yes, we play contemporary music from modern crooners like Michael Bublé.
