8 Key Czech Wooden Blow Accordions

8 Key Czech Wooden Blow Accordions

This pair of 8 Key Czech wooden blow accordions appeared on eBay in the summer of 2014. They are interesting because unlike the 4 key and 8 key wooden blow accordions already on this site that have metal cup mouthpieces resembling those found on brass winds, the mouthpieces on these are wooden, and are made to look like those we see on woodwinds.

Both the vintage, sax-shaped and clarinet-shaped “thing” are in lovely condition—especially when you consider how old they are. This is how they were described in the eBay ad by the seller:

Lot of two, vintage wooden, toy instruments… 15″ long saxophone and 12-1/4″ clarinet. Both have black painted wooden bodies, and silver finished metal keys. Marked “Made in Czecho-Slovakia” on the metal plate of the clarinet, and “Czecho-Slovakia” on the metal band around the saxophone.

Both are in good vintage condition. There are small chips to the paint around the bell of the clarinet, as well as a spot of wear on the tip of the mouthpiece of the saxophone There is loss to the finish on the keys, but they still work.

Note the size of the sax-shaped blow accordion, it is very close in size to the 8 key wooden blow accordion I had seen a few years back on eBay. That one was described as being 16″ long.

What surprised me was the low price that these two items sold for. A buyer managed to pick up the pair for only $20.49 US. If I had a display cabinet full of sax-shaped thing collectibles, I would have picked these babies up for myself.
