This interesting little toy caught my eye because it is the first clear, coloured, vintage, plastic saxophone-shaped toy that I’ve seen.
The seller described this vintage gem like this on eBay:
Saxaphone Plastic Toy Horn circa 1950 Duperite Cat F49
makes noise when blown
has some scratches
After much research of the term Duperite, I came up with 2 references, but very little information.
In the case of this toy sax, the term apparently refers to the Duperite Plastics company. The other reference I found for duperite, is that it was one of the early plastics. However, since I have found no real information about either the Duperite Plastics company, or the plastic itself, I don’t know if the company used the same-named plastic in its products. Or for matter, if the company invented the plastic.
This curious toy is quite unique, and is really an enigma at this point in time. My hope is that in the future I’ll come across more information about the company and/or the plastic material.
