If you are not sure what a stencil sax is, please read this page first.
The following is arguably the most comprehensive list of stencil saxophones found on the Net. (Note it also contains the second and third line, or in some cases student model horns. These models are indicated in pink text.) The information was compiled through my own research; the work done by my friend and colleague, Pete Hales; through comments and emails to an article on my blog; and through the input of players on both the SOTW and Cafe Saxophone forums.
I have focused on vintage saxophones, with the exception of modern Asian bass saxophone manufacturers Jinyin and Jinbao. Why? Because I specialize in vintage and bass saxophones, and quite simply put, it is nearly impossible to figure out who makes modern stencil horns anyway.
Is it perfect? No. Is it 100% complete. No. However, to my knowledge it is the only online stencil saxophone list that, wherever possible, provides links to the various stencil horns for you to see what these instruments look like.
NOTE: Over the years many ordering companies ordered saxophones from multiple manufacturers. This is why you see some stencil names appearing under multiple columns. Furthermore, established saxophone manufacturers were known to order saxophones from each other if they were unable to fulfil an order.
For example, when JK was unable to fulfill a large order of baritone saxophones, they outsourced some of this bari sax production to B&S. This in turn can lead to confusion because of course a Beaugnier-made SML looks so different than one made in the SML factory. Or a JK-made Evette & Schaeffer looks different than one made in the Buffet factory, and so on, and so on, and so on.
Confused yet? Welcome to the world of stencil saxophones. 😉
